The story

Twenty-eight years after the Rage virus outbreak, a heavily-defended island survives connected to the mainland by a single causeway. When one of the group leaves the island into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.

What it’s like

Grimy digital texture with a deliberately rough, handheld immediacy, shot largely in the bleached greens and dirty greys of the Northumberland coast and its ruined towns, where overcast skies and wet tarmac give everything a cold, sodden sheen. Sudden flashes of saturated red and hard shadow cut through the murk, and the camera often lingers in wide, empty landscapes that make the countryside feel vast and exposed. The score pulses with synth-driven menace and sudden percussive drops, while quiet stretches of wind, birdsong and footsteps on gravel leave room for dread to build. The mood is bleak, unsettling and tense, with a gritty survival-horror edge that tips into strange, eerie folklore. Violence is frequent and often graphic, with bloody infection scenes, sharp gore and disturbing cruelty; the fear comes as much from disturbing imagery and dread as from action. Pacing shifts between slow, watchful stillness and abrupt bursts of chaos. It suits late-night viewing for people who want a grim, atmospheric sequel with a strong sense of place and an uneasy moral undercurrent, and it is not suited to anyone seeking something gentle.
