Privacy policy

Your account. Your email address and a password, which our database provider stores as a one-way hash; we never see it. If you sign in with Google instead, Google shares your email address, name and profile picture with us.

What you tell us you loved.The titles you add and the reasons you write, the picks we make for each, and anything you mark as “Seen it” or “Not for me”. This is the heart of the product, and it’s tied to your account.

Searches.When you search, the text you type is sent to our AI providers to understand it (see below). We don’t keep a history of your searches tied to you. To make repeat searches fast and cheap, we cache the processed result (not your identity) for up to 30 days, filed under a scrambled key rather than your words.

Technical data. Your IP address is used for a few minutes at a time to rate-limit requests, so nobody can overload the service. Our host keeps short-lived server logs. When something breaks, an error report is sent to our error tracker without your IP address, cookies or what you typed into search.

Only to run Because I liked:

• to find picks that match the reasons you give, and explain each one;
• to keep your loves and picks so each new love sharpens the next;
• to keep the service secure, stop abuse, and fix what breaks.

We don’t sell your data, show ads, or share it with advertisers. We don’t train AI models on what you write.

We use a small number of services to run the app. Each gets only what its job needs.

Supabase

Database and sign-in: your account, loves, picks and feedback.

Vercel

Hosting: serves the site and runs it.

Cloudflare

Our domain and network: routes traffic to the site.

Anthropic

Claude reads your search or the reasons you wrote, to understand them and to write each pick’s explanation.

OpenAI

Turns text into numbers (embeddings) so we can find works with a similar feel.

Upstash

Rate limits and short-term caches.

Sentry

Error reports, stored in the EU, with personal details removed as described above.

Google

Sign-in, only if you choose “Continue with Google”.

Anthropic and OpenAI process text under their API terms, which don’t use it to train their models by default. Film and TV availability comes from TMDB and JustWatch; we ask them about titles, never about you.

Some of these providers process data outside your country, including in the United States.

Two kinds, both needed for the site to work:

• Sign-in cookieskeep you signed in. They’re removed when you sign out.
• A country preference, if you pick a country for “where to watch”. It lasts a year.

No advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

When you share a set of picks, we make a snapshot: the reasons you wrote and the picks with their explanations. Anyone with the link can see it, and it doesn’t show your name or email. Deleting the love removes the share with it.

• Your account, loves and picks: until you delete them or your account.
• Removing a love deletes its picks and any shares of it.
• Search caches: up to 30 days. Rate-limit counters: minutes.
• Error reports: about 30 days.

You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account and everything tied to it. Email hello@becauseiliked.comfrom your account’s address and we’ll act on it within 30 days. You can remove individual loves yourself, any time, from My loves.

These rights apply wherever you live. If you’re in India they’re yours under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act; in the EU or UK, under the GDPR, and you can also complain to your local data protection authority.

Accounts are for people 18 and over, or 13 and over with a parent or guardian’s permission. If you believe a child has given us data without that permission, email hello@becauseiliked.comand we’ll delete it.

If we change how we handle data, we’ll update this page and its date. For a change that matters, such as a new kind of data or a new provider, we’ll also tell signed-in users before it takes effect.
