3 Men and a Baby

Directed by Leonard Nimoy

  • comedy

The story

Three bachelors find themselves forced to take care of a baby left by one of the guy's girlfriends.

What it’s like

Bright, warm, mid-80s studio comedy: sunlit Manhattan apartments with big windows, cluttered bachelor flats, and the soft, even lighting of a Hollywood comedy of its era, with a bouncy, synth-tinged pop score that keeps the mood buoyant. Camera work is straightforward and unfussy, mostly medium shots and two-shots that let the three leads bounce off each other, with the city glimpsed through street-level windows and cab-filled avenues. Its vibe is light, sweet and slapstick-cheerful, the kind of comfortable comedy that suits a lazy Saturday afternoon, a comfort rewatch, or something easy on a weeknight. Pacing is brisk and episodic, built around small domestic mishaps (diapers, bottles, a rapidly reorganized home) rather than any real danger. Emotionally it moves from wary irritation toward affection, as three self-centred men slowly learn tenderness and responsibility. Intensity is very low: some mild rude humour and romantic comedy awkwardness, no violence, no gore, and nothing frightening. It is for viewers who want warm, goofy, feel-good comedy with a soft heart and no edge.
