The story

A story very loosely based the 480 B.C. Battle of Thermopylae, where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians.

What it’s like

Heavily stylized and digitally saturated: nearly every frame is graded toward bronze, ochre and bleached blue, with bodies rendered in high-contrast slow motion, sprays of red against desaturated sand and stone, and sudden flashes of bright white light on armour. Camera moves are constant and theatrical, with sweeping crane shots, speed ramps during combat and frequent static tableaux that freeze the action into comic-panel compositions. The score is pounding orchestral percussion and cello-driven swells that rarely let up, and the Spartan chanting and clash of shields give the battles a relentless, ritualised beat. The vibe is operatic, blood-soaked and grandly stylised, a mythic spectacle rather than a grounded history. Violence is constant and graphic: dismemberment, decapitation, gore and stabbings are shown often and at length, with some sexual content and brutal cruelty in the Persian court scenes. This is not for anyone wanting something gentle; it suits a loud Friday night, fans of comic-book aesthetics and anyone who wants high-octane ancient-world bombast with little interest in historical accuracy.
