The story
Tom, greeting-card writer and hopeless romantic, is caught completely off-guard when his girlfriend, Summer, suddenly dumps him. He reflects on their 500 days together to try to figure out where their love affair went sour, and in doing so, Tom rediscovers his true passions in life.
What it’s like
Bright, sun-washed Los Angeles and a nonlinear sprawl of day-counted scenes, cut with quick split-screen comparisons and a playful animated title card that resets the clock. The look is crisp and textured, with warm apartment light, pastel greeting-card colour, and an IKEA-bright office contrasted against shadowy, slightly sad bedrooms. The soundtrack is an indie-pop mix of Smiths-style jangle and bright, bittersweet guitar, which keeps even the sad beats buoyant. Vibe: wistful, funny, self-aware, with a bruised-heart warmth that suits a rainy Sunday or a late-night rewatch after a breakup. The pacing is brisk and jumpy, moving between memory and present in playful leaps, while the emotional register stays light on its feet but turns honest. The central arc follows a romantic who learns to see a relationship as it actually was, not as he wished it to be. Intensity is low: some profanity, a bit of sexual content and brief drinking, no violence. For people who want a romcom that is clever about love, heartbreak and the stories we tell ourselves, without melodrama.
