The story
Abducted from her convent school at 17, headstrong Scottish beauty Jennifer Merrick does not easily surrender to 29 year old Royce Westmoreland, Duke of Claymore. Known as "The Wolf"; his very name strikes terror in the hearts of his enemies. But proud Jennifer will have nothing to do with the fierce English warrior who holds her captive, this handsome rogue who taunts her with his blazing arrogance. Boldly she challenges his will... until the night he takes her in his powerful embrace, awakening in her an irresistible hunger. And suddenly Jennifer finds herself ensnared in a bewildering web... a seductive, dangerous trap of pride, passion, loyalty, and overwhelming love. What it’s like
Lush, sweeping historical prose with a fevered, romantic voice: long sentences heavy with castle stone, drafty halls, rain on Highland moors, candlelit bedchambers and the glitter of court finery, rendered in the overheated register of classic bodice-ripper fiction. The mood is a bruising push-pull of banter and defiance, a sharp-tongued heroine and an arrogant warlord trading barbs until the sparks turn hungrier, with heaving passion and fierce pride at every turn. Pacing is brisk in the dialogue and expansive in the scenery, with long stretches of inner turmoil and sudden swings between tenderness and temper. Intensity runs moderate to high: the story opens with an abduction and a captive heroine, the romance carries coercive undertones that some readers will find uncomfortable, there is frank sexual content, and battle and political violence arrive in brief, bloody bursts, though gore stays limited. Sensory and sprawling, it suits a long weekend read or a rainy afternoon under a blanket with time to spare. It is for readers who love old-fashioned dramatic romance, enemies-to-lovers heat, and a big saga that unfolds across many books.
