The story

Self-important author Leon joins his best friend on a summer holiday near the Baltic Sea to complete his novel. When they arrive, they find their house is already occupied by a carefree woman who challenges Leon to open up. Meanwhile, forest wildfires rage around them and impending disaster looms.

What it’s like

Bright, unhurried summer light over pine forest, sandy paths, and a cold-blue Baltic shore, with a haze of smoke building on the horizon as the days heat up. Petzold frames in composed, mostly still shots that let the characters move through the landscape at their own pace, and the mood is sun-warmed and wry, with a current of unease that never quite breaks. The sound is largely ambient, with birdsong, bicycle tyres on gravel and sea wind, and the music is sparse. Its vibe is languid, self-aware and quietly anxious, a summer that feels both idle and running out. It suits a slow afternoon, a long weekend away from home, or a thoughtful night alone. The people's arcs turn on pride, friendship and the willingness to be seen, the comedy is dry and observational, and the rhythm is loose and conversational. The intensity is low: some frank sexual content and nudity, no violence, and the wildfire threat stays on the edges as dread rather than spectacle. It is for viewers who enjoy talky, character-led European drama with a gentle sense of humour.
