The story
The first book in Kazu Kibuishi's #1 New York Times bestselling series that features a beautiful but dangerous world of new friends, giant robots, and shadowy enemies! After the tragic death of their father, Emily and Navin move with their mother to the home of her deceased great-grandfather. The strange house proves to be dangerous. Before long, a tentacled creature lures the kids' mom through a door in the basement. Em and Navin, desperate not to lose her, follow her into a fantastical world inhabited by robots, mysterious plants, and talking animals. It's up to Em and Navin to figure out how to set things right and save their mother's life!
What it’s like
Luminous, painterly digital color in warm ochres, deep greens and dusky blues, with rounded, expressive character drawings and panels that let the eye linger on overgrown gardens, rusted machinery and sunlit forest canopies. The house's dim corridors and basement feel close and faintly sinister, and the fantastical world opens into wide, buzzing landscapes full of strange plants and clockwork creatures. Reading it feels like a rainy-afternoon wander through an old storybook that keeps turning unexpected corners. The vibe is wondering and gently eerie, with a melancholy undercurrent from a family still grieving a father. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with quiet pauses between set pieces, and the emotional arc follows two siblings learning to trust each other and face fear together. Intensity is moderate: a creepy tentacled creature, tense chases and some peril, but little gore and no explicit violence or sexual content. It suits a comfort read, a long train ride, or a reader who wants an adventure that is spooky without being harsh. It is for readers of middle-grade and all ages who love fantasy graphic novels, mysterious houses and sibling adventures.
