The story

Zack Mayo is an aloof, taciturn man who aspires to be a navy pilot. Once he arrives at training camp for his 13-week officer's course, Mayo runs afoul of abrasive, no-nonsense drill Sergeant Emil Foley. Mayo is an excellent cadet, but a little cold around the heart, so Foley rides him mercilessly, sensing that the young man would be prime officer material if he weren't so self-involved. Zack's affair with a working girl is likewise compromised by his unwillingness to give of himself.

What it’s like

Warm, sun-washed Pacific Northwest light gives way to the hard fluorescent glare and sweating concrete of a naval training base, so the film moves between two temperatures: the cool bluish gray of barracks and drill fields and the softer amber of the Bremerton hotel rooms and dance halls where the romance breathes. Its camera stays mostly grounded and unfussy, with long, steady takes of training routines, bodies in formation, and quieter two-shots that let the faces hold the frame. The score is a big, swelling 1980s orchestral pop, all brass and lush strings, which makes even the drill-ground sequences feel like a rousing comeback. Vibe: earnest, sentimental, old-fashioned uplift with a gruff undercurrent. It suits a rainy weekend afternoon, a comfort rewatch, or a night in with someone you want to cry a little with. Pacing is steady and deliberate, building through rigorous, repetitive training toward emotional payoffs; the arc follows a guarded young man learning to open up and let people in. Intensity is moderate: some harsh yelling and verbal cruelty from the drill instructor, a few brawls and a suicide-adjacent crisis, and frank but non-graphic sexuality. For people who want romance with grit, an underdog story, and a big, unashamed emotional finish.
