The story

A year has passed since Menma's ghostly return to the Super Peace Busters. Although the time they spent together during that summer was short, the five members reminisce about what happened as they each write a letter to their lost friend.

What it’s like

Warm, hand-drawn anime with soft pastel palettes and bright summer skies set against the greenery and wooden houses of a small mountain town, the mood shifting to muted greys and rain-washed blues whenever grief surfaces. Its look is clean and sentimental rather than gritty: lingering close-ups on faces, gentle camera drifts through empty classrooms and riverside paths, and a score of warm piano and strings that swells at exactly the moments it should. The vibe is bittersweet nostalgia, the ache of a summer that ended too soon, best suited to a rainy afternoon or a late evening alone with a box of tissues nearby. Pacing is unhurried, with long stretches of gentle teasing and quiet confession between friends who have drifted apart and must face each other again. Its emotional arc follows a group of former childhood friends slowly confronting unspoken feelings, regret, and the weight of a loss they never fully said goodbye to. Violence is absent; the intensity is emotional, with sustained sadness, tearful scenes, and a supernatural element treated tenderly rather than frightfully. It suits viewers who want heartfelt coming-of-age drama, unrequited romance, and a story that lets grief be soft and gentle.
