The story

A bet pits a British inventor, a Chinese thief and a French artist on a worldwide adventure that they can circle the globe in 80 days.

What it’s like

Bright, busy, candy-coloured spectacle: sun-washed exteriors, saturated golds and blues, and a jaunty set of hot-air balloons, steam contraptions and brass-trimmed gadgets that give every city a fresh burst of colour. The camera moves quickly and often, with sweeping aerial pulls over landscapes and rapid cuts through markets, streets and crowded trains, so the picture rarely sits still for long. Sound is full and cheerful, a bouncy orchestral score with comic stings and the clatter of crowds and machinery, and the whole thing plays like a Saturday-afternoon matinee. Vibe: lighthearted, playful, a little giddy. It suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a family movie night, or an easy background watch while doing something with your hands. Intensity is low: slapstick scuffles and mild peril, with no gore and nothing frightening. The pacing is brisk and episodic, and the emotional arc is simple, a prickly inventor and a sly thief slowly warming into friendship. Made for people who want an upbeat, colourful travelogue with light laughs and no weight.
