The story

Detectives Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowrey of the Miami Narcotics Task Force are tasked with stopping the flow of the drug Ecstasy into Miami. They track the drugs to the whacked-out Cuban drug lord Johnny Tapia, who is also involved in a bloody war with Russian and Haitian mobsters. If that isn't bad enough, there's tension between the two detectives when Marcus discovers that playboy Mike is secretly romancing Marcus’ sister, Syd.

What it’s like

Saturated, sun-blasted Miami in constant motion: swooping crane shots over sea-blue water and pastel art-deco streets, slow-motion walks and a relentless high-gloss digital sheen, with the color cranked until everything seems to glow. Night scenes lean into hot neon, car headlights and muzzle flashes, and the score is a pounding wall of hip-hop and synth-driven rock that rarely lets up. The vibe is loud, brash and buddy-comedy cheeky, with a sweaty, swaggering energy that keeps moving from banter to chase to explosion. Pacing is breathless and long, with the two leads trading quips while the plot throws one set piece after another at the screen. Violence is frequent and stylized: gunfights, car crashes, explosions and bloody deaths, plus some drug-related brutality and a kidnapping thread, though it stays more action-movie spectacle than grim. The emotional register is goofy and affectionate, centered on a loud but loyal friendship between two mismatched cops that is tested by a romance. It suits a noisy Friday night with friends or a big-screen action fix, and is for people who want spectacle, wisecracks and bombast rather than anything gentle.
