The story

The kingdom of Avantia is in danger- an evil wizard named Malvel gained control over the Beasts that protect Avantia, and turned them wild. A boy named Tom has to save the Beasts and return them to their normal nature. Will he and his companions succeed, or will he flee after his first challenge? German-language description Actionreiche Fantasy, spannende Missionen und gefährliche Biester! Die erfolgreiche Kinderbuch-Reihe mit zahlreichen Illustrationen ist besonders für Jungs ab 8 Jahren geeignet.

What it’s like

Short, punchy chapters with a brisk, plainly worded voice and frequent cliffhangers, the sort of book that reads in one or two sittings on a lazy afternoon or during a bedtime stretch. The world is bright and pictorial: a green, storybook kingdom of forests, rocky passes and castle walls, with the monsters rendered as vivid, slightly grotesque creatures, and a steady run of illustrations on the page breaks it up further. Expect no subtlety in the look of things, just clear action staging that is easy to picture. Sound-wise this is a rhythm of quick sequences: a sudden attack, a tense pause, a hurried escape. Intensity is moderate, with monster combat and scrapes that never linger on gore, so fear comes as a jolt rather than dread. The emotional register is earnest and upbeat, centred on a young hero learning courage and loyalty alongside his friends. Ideal for young readers, especially boys around eight and up, and for adults who want a light, optimistic adventure to read aloud or dip into.
