The story
Two rock-'n-rolling teens, on the verge of failing their class, set out on a quest to make the ultimate school history report after being presented with a time machine.
What it’s like
Bright, flat, sun-saturated suburban California gives way to garish time-travel colour: a phone booth glowing against cardboard-cutout sets, medieval castles and Old West saloons shot with the cheerful, slightly overlit look of a 1980s studio comedy. The camera stays mostly plain and steady, letting the gags land in wide two-shots, and the soundtrack is loud and guitar-driven, with power-chord riffs and air-guitar bursts punctuating every jump through time. The vibe is goofy, sunny and affectionately dim, the kind of comfort-watch to put on with friends on a lazy afternoon or as easy background for a long-haul flight. Its pacing is brisk and episodic, hopping from one historical set piece to the next, while the emotional core is simple: two cheerfully underprepared best friends slowly learn that wanting to be taken seriously matters more than passing. Intensity is very low. There is some slapstick, a few mild threats and comic peril, and no real gore, sexuality or cruelty. It suits anyone wanting something gentle, silly and reliably upbeat, especially people who grew up with it or who enjoy broad, good-natured nonsense.
