The story

A drama about a multi-generational family of cops dedicated to New York City law enforcement. Frank Reagan is the New York Police Commissioner and heads both the police force and the Reagan brood. He runs his department as diplomatically as he runs his family, even when dealing with the politics that plagued his unapologetically bold father, Henry, during his stint as Chief.

What it’s like

Warm, steady family drama with the look of a network procedural: bright daylight in offices and kitchens, New York streets shot in clean, even light, and a lot of rooms where the family gathers around a long table. Camera work is conventional and unhurried, with frequent two-shots and close-ups during dinner-table debates, and the palette leans toward navy uniforms, polished wood and warm amber interiors. Sound is a familiar mix of city ambience, police radio chatter, and a gentle, sentimental score that swells at moral turning points. Crime scenes are handled matter-of-factly, with brief shootouts, fistfights and bloodless aftermath rather than gore; the threat is real but rarely lingers. The pace is measured, with one case per episode threaded against long conversations about duty, loyalty and what the badge costs at home. Its emotional register is earnest and reassuring, with an inspirational streak in which decent people argue, apologize and hold firm. Good for a Sunday evening, a comfort rewatch, or background while cooking, especially for viewers who want order, family loyalty and institutional decency, with moderate violence and no sexual content.
