The story
After time traveling to the Joseon era, a talented chef meets a tyrant king. Her modern dishes captivate his palate, but royal challenges await her.
What it’s like
Warm, saturated palaces and candlelit banquet halls, with food photographed as much as the people eating it: glossy sauces, steam curling off ceramic bowls, the bright clatter of a modern kitchen cutting against the muted silks and dark wood of the Joseon court. The camera lingers on hands plating, on close shots of a single dish being tasted, and on the sly exchanges across a table where a gourmand's skepticism slowly softens. Scoring leans on lilting strings and playful pizzicato that turns tender when feelings start to show. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with comic set pieces giving way to quieter scenes of court intrigue and private moments of loneliness and curiosity. Its emotional register is warm and bittersweet, a romcom with real stakes and a steady current of loving humour. The intensity is mild: some palace scheming, tense confrontations and occasional threats, with no gore and little on-screen violence. It suits a comfort binge, a weekend with something charming on in the background, or a long evening of wanting to be fed as much as entertained, and it's for viewers who enjoy food-led romance, costume drama, and cooking as a kind of love language.
