The story

During the Japanese occupation of Korea in the 1930s, one of the darkest periods of Korean history, heroes came from ordinary men who did extraordinary things in their everyday lives. Lee Kang To is one of those men. A skilled martial artist, Kang To actively participates in the independence movement to fight against the Japanese imperialist regime. He is known as “Gaksital” because he hides his true identity behind a rosy-cheeked traditional bridal mask, known as a “gaksital,” when he fights against the Japanese. But can one man do enough to right the wrongs of a terrifying national enemy?

What it’s like

Dim, candlelit interiors alternate with sun-washed colonial streets of 1930s Seoul, with hanbok, Western suits and the stiff uniforms of occupation all sharing the frame. The palette leans toward muted ochres, indigo nights and the flat grey of city winters, while the rosy painted cheeks of the bridal mask give the hero's night-time disguise an uncanny, theatrical glow. Action is staged with physical, grounded fight choreography, and the score swells with strings and traditional percussion during chases and confrontations, then drops away to quiet piano in the romantic and reflective passages. The show moves at a steady drama pace, with long stretches of courtship, suspicion and political maneuvering broken up by bursts of action. Its emotional register is earnest and melodramatic, with a love triangle, a hunt for a masked figure and a slowly building sense of cost. Violence is a regular presence: fights, shootings and interrogations, with torture scenes that are harrowing rather than graphic, and some murders and revenge killings. It suits viewers who enjoy period romance with a strong resistance thread and are comfortable with recurring violence and darker scenes, and it is not gentle viewing.
