The story

Chuck Noland, a top international manager for FedEx, and Kelly, a Ph.D. student, are in love and heading towards marriage. Then Chuck's plane to Malaysia crashes at sea during a terrible storm. He's the only survivor, and finds himself marooned on a desolate island. With no way to escape, Chuck must find ways to survive in his new home.

What it’s like

Long, patient takes of a single man in a vast, indifferent landscape, shot with the saturated, almost tactile realism of late-1990s-to-2000s studio cinematography: the blue-green Pacific glare, bleached sand, and rough driftwood textures that make the island feel physically hard to live on. Early scenes carry the cool, fluorescent sheen of a busy corporate world, which gives way to the flat, bright monotony of endless sky and surf, with the storm sequence as a roaring, claustrophobic shock. Sound is largely natural, waves, wind, crabs and a lone soundtrack of sparse, aching piano that swells only at the rare emotional peaks. The pacing is deliberately slow, with long stretches of wordless problem-solving that reward patience, and the tone is melancholy and quietly determined rather than thrilling. Its intensity includes a brief, startling plane crash, a few tense moments of injury, and a harrowing, non-graphic suicide attempt, but no sustained gore or cruelty. It suits a contemplative evening, and it is for viewers who want an absorbing, grounded story of endurance, isolation and the slow rebuilding of a life.
