The story

Tomoya Okazaki is a third year high school student resentful of his life. His mother passed away from a car accident when he was younger, causing his father to resort to alcohol and cigarettes. This results in fights between the two until Tomoya's shoulder is injured in a fight. Since then, Tomoya has had distant relationships with his father, causing him to become a delinquent over time. While on a walk to school, he meets a strange girl named Nagisa Furukawa who is a year older, but is repeating due to illness. Due to this, she is often alone as most of her friends have moved on. The two begin hanging out and slowly, as time goes by, Tomoya finds his life shifting in a new direction.

What it’s like

Soft watercolour backdrops in pale greens and warm peach, with cherry blossoms drifting past school gates and long golden-hour walks home, give the look a gentle, faded quality. Early episodes lean on bright, bouncy comedy and easy classroom chatter, then the mood slowly deepens into a wistful, sometimes aching melancholy, carried by simple piano melodies and quiet pauses that let feelings settle. Its rhythm is leisurely and episodic, with whole episodes spent on small, ordinary days before a stretch of heavier emotion arrives. The intensity is low: a few scuffles and some fraught arguments early on, grief and illness handled with tenderness, and one or two sad deaths that land hard but without gore or graphic cruelty. The romance is sweet and slow, and the supernatural touches are gentle rather than frightening. It suits a rainy Sunday, a comfort rewatch, or a late evening when you want something warm that will likely leave you a little teary. It is for viewers who love character-driven slice of life and don't mind a long, emotional journey.
