The story

Detectives Jimmy and Paul, despite nine years as partners, can still sometimes seem like polar opposites—especially when Paul's unpredictable antics get them suspended without pay. Already strapped for cash and trying to pay for his daughter's wedding, Jimmy decides to sell a rare baseball card that's worth tens of thousands. Unfortunately, when the collector's shop is robbed and the card vanishes with the crook, Paul and Jimmy end up going rogue, tracking down the card and the drug ring behind its theft, all on their own time and without any backup—except for each other.

What it’s like

Bright, flat daylight over ordinary New York streets, the kind of unglamorous Brooklyn and Queens exteriors where car washes, bodegas and stoops look just as they do on any afternoon. Kevin Smith frames most scenes in plain, medium two-shots and static setups, letting the camera sit back while the two leads trade rapid-fire insults, so the image feels more like a sitcom set than a stylised crime film. The palette is warm and unshowy, with brownstone reds and sodium-lit night interiors, and the score is a loose, jaunty mix of cop-movie brass and pop cues that keeps the mood light even when the bullets come out. Violence is present and occasionally sharp, with gunfire, scuffles and a few bloody moments, but it is brief and played for absurd jokes rather than dread or gore. Sexual humour and crude language run through the dialogue constantly. The rhythm is brisk and talky, built on reversals and bickering, and the emotional arc follows an older cop who has grown dependent on his partner, and who gradually learns to value him, with a tender family thread about a daughter's wedding. It suits a lazy weekend evening or a comfort rewatch with friends. It is for viewers who enjoy buddy comedy, ribald banter, and shaggy crime-caper energy more than tension.
