The story

A woman who survived the brutal killing of her family as a child is forced to confront the events of that day.

What it’s like

Washed-out Midwestern winter and muted, desaturated interiors give this one a cold, grey-blue palette, with flat farmland under pale skies and dim kitchens lit by a single lamp. The flashback sequences shift into warmer, grainier tones, so the past feels like faded home-movie memory set against a present that never quite warms up. Its vibe is bleak, uneasy and slow-burning, a mystery that unspools through long conversational scenes, handheld close-ups and sudden cuts to childhood fragments, with a brooding, sparse score that leaves room for silence. Violence is significant: the murder of a family is shown in disturbing, graphic flashback, and there are references to cult activity, prison, sexual exploitation and a pregnancy, so it lands hard rather than gently. Emotionally it follows a damaged woman and her estranged brother in a grim, raw register, with little relief along the way. It suits viewers who want a dark, morally heavy crime drama with a psychological edge, not a comfort watch.
