The story

Spoof of romantic comedies which focuses on a man, his crush, his parents, and her father.

What it’s like

Bright, flat studio lighting and saturated primary colors, the kind of glossy, evenly lit digital look that makes every apartment, restaurant and suburban kitchen feel like a set. The camera mostly sits in plain medium shots and wide two-shots, letting the gags land in the middle of the frame, with quick cuts and frequent sight-gag inserts that scan like a sketch show. Sound is bouncy and generic: upbeat pop cues, sitcom-style stings and exaggerated sound effects that underline every pratfall. Its vibe is brash, sugary and deliberately silly, a rom-com caricature that plays the clichés of dating and meeting the parents for broad, crude laughs. It moves at a fast clip with little breathing room, and its emotional register stays light and winking, following a nervous young man who keeps stumbling through a string of awkward dates and family encounters before finding his way to the woman he likes. Expect sexual innuendo, bodily gags and slapstick rather than violence or real danger; nothing here is frightening or cruel in a lasting way. It suits a comfort-silly night in, background laughing while folding laundry, or a friend's party, and it is aimed at people who want easy, unpretentious gags and a spoof of romantic comedy tropes.
