The story
Dead or Alive: Dimensions is a fighting game developed for the Nintendo 3DS. It is the 5th game in the Dead or Alive series and the first to be released on a Nintendo system. Dimensions has 26 playable characters, more than any previous installment in the franchise had to offer, and uses a modified engine of Dead or Alive 4. The story of the game is a brief version of the stories of the previous four main Dead or Alive games. The 3DS's touch screen is used for executing special fighting moves for his or her character, while the top screen is used for displaying the fight.
What it’s like
Bright, glossy anime fighters rendered in polygonal 3D, with the 3DS's stereoscopic depth pushing the arenas toward the viewer: sun-washed courtyards, moonlit dojos and crowded neon stages, all lit with the saturated, slightly plasticky sheen of mid-2000s console art. The sound is pure arcade rhythm, with clacking impacts, crowd murmurs, and bright J-pop-tinged stage themes that loop cheerfully under each bout. Matches are fast and punchy, the touch screen adding a small tactile flourish when you trigger special moves, and the mood stays playful and showy rather than grim. Fans of the series will recognise its flirtatious, theatrical energy, but it works equally well as a quick portable session on a commute or a wind-down hour after dinner. Violence is stylised and cartoonish: a steady stream of blows, throws and knockouts, with sexualised costume design and suggestive character poses but no gore and little real menace. It suits players who want competitive or casual fighting in a colourful, glossy package, especially those who enjoy roster-hunting, tag battles and unlocking alternate outfits.
