The story

A brilliant but idiosyncratic British detective and his resourceful local team solve baffling murder mysteries on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie.

What it’s like

Bright, sun-saturated days on a Caribbean island, with turquoise water, white-sand beaches, lush green hillsides and pastel colonial buildings framed in wide, steady shots that favour the scenery as much as the suspects. Sunlit and breezy, with a warm, easy-going vibe that suits a lazy Sunday afternoon, a sofa-and-tea evening, or a comfort rewatch while doing something with your hands. Episodes move at a relaxed, unhurried clip, built around a murder investigation that unspools through interviews, small-town gossip and gentle detours, with the score a light, steel-drum-tinged mix of island rhythms and cosy mystery jingles. The tone is warm and playful, with a lot of affectionate banter between the mismatched investigators and a slow, quietly comic rapport that deepens across the seasons. Violence happens offscreen or is brief and bloodless, with no gore and little real threat, so the darkest moments land as puzzles rather than horror. Good for viewers who want a classic whodunit with sunshine, character warmth and very low intensity.
