The story

A singer marries his biggest fan, but his uncle plans to kill him in order to gain his money.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated studio colour and early-1990s Bollywood gloss: warm tungsten interiors, sunlit Mumbai streets, lush songs staged in open fields and rain-slicked courtyards, with the camera moving freely through big musical set-pieces. The sound is loud and melodic, with lilting romantic songs, swelling orchestral strings and drum-heavy dance numbers that give way to sudden hushed moments of dread. The mood swings between sweet, playful romance and darker melodrama, with a grieving man, a scheming relative and a crime that cuts through the lightness. Pacing is brisk and emotional, the kind of film that hops from a comic wedding to a tense confrontation within minutes. Intensity is moderate: a few violent threats and a frightening assault attempt, some brief bloodshed, and a crime-thriller tension that stays more melodramatic than gory. It suits a comfort rewatch of old-school musical romance, an evening of big songs and big feelings, and viewers who enjoy romance with a shadowy thriller edge and do not mind a sudden turn into danger.
