The story

With the cold weather and the stress of the approaching holiday season, the Heffleys decide to escape to a tropical island resort for some much-needed rest and relaxation. A few days in paradise should do wonders for Greg and his frazzled family. But the Heffleys soon discover that paradise isn't everything it's cracked up to be. Sun poisoning, stomach troubles, and venomous critters all threaten to ruin the family's vacation. Can their trip be saved, or will this island getaway end in disaster?

What it’s like

Sketchy pencil-style cartoons fill nearly every page, with stick-figure family members drawn in loose, doodled lines on lined notebook paper and the occasional full-spread sketch of a palm-fringed beach. The voice is first-person diary entries, short and deadpan, with hand-lettered asides and a constant sense of a bored, sardonic kid narrating his own misfortunes. It reads in a few bursts at a time, ideal for a lazy afternoon, a long flight, or a reluctant reader who wants something light and quick. The mood is warm, wry and low-stakes: sunburn, seasickness, lost luggage and a swarm of creepy-crawlies are played for laughs rather than real fear. Slapstick physical comedy and family squabbling drive most of the humour, and the tone stays affectionate even as the Heffleys unravel. Violence is absent; the worst moments are mild mishaps and cringe-inducing embarrassment, with no sexual content and no real cruelty. Written for middle-grade readers and for adults who enjoy gentle, self-deprecating family comedy with a sense of nostalgia for childhood.
