The story
An instant #1 USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and New York Times bestseller! In The Deep End, book 15 of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series from #1 international bestselling author Jeff Kinney, Greg Heffley and his family hit the road for a cross-country camping trip, ready for the adventure of a lifetime. But things take an unexpected turn, and they find themselves stranded at an RV park that’s not exactly a summertime paradise. When the skies open up and the water starts to rise, the Heffleys wonder if they can save their vacation—or if they’re already in too deep.
What it’s like
Scratchy pen sketches and stick-figure cartoons sprawl across lined diary pages, with generous white space, big hand-lettered captions and a wobbly, self-deprecating voice narrating every small humiliation in short clipped entries. The mood is bright and busy rather than cosy-dark: a summer road-trip wardrobe of greens and browns against a drab, sodden campground, where the rain seems to fall in ruled grey lines across each spread. Sound is the reader's own inner voice, grumpy and deadpan, with the occasional family squabble ringing through the pages like a sitcom laugh track. Pacing is quick and episodic, one joke per page and chapters that end on small disasters, so it rewards dipping in for a few minutes at a time. Emotionally it is light, warm and gently exasperated, with a slow thaw in the family dynamics as the characters pull together against the weather. Intensity is very low: mild slapstick, peril that is mostly embarrassment and flooding, no gore, no sexual content, nothing frightening. It suits a lazy summer afternoon, a long-haul journey, or reading aloud with a child, and it is for readers who want a funny, easy, comforting story about an imperfect family.
