The story
One year after his heroics in Los Angeles, John McClane is an off-duty cop who is the wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time. On a snowy Christmas Eve, as he waits for his wife's plane to land at Washington Dulles International Airport, terrorists take over the air traffic control system in a plot to free a South American army general and drug smuggler being flown into the US to face drug charges. It's now up to McClane to take on the terrorists, while coping with an inept airport police chief, an uncooperative anti-terrorist squad, and the life of his wife and everyone else trapped in planes circling overhead.
What it’s like
Cold, bright winter light and a grey-white palette of snow, runway lamps and fluorescent terminal corridors give Die Hard 2 a crisp, mechanical look, with the airport's glass walls and jetliner fuselages framed in wide, busy compositions that keep the geography legible. Harlin's camera stays fairly kinetic, with fast cuts and handheld moves through the terminal and sweeping aerial shots of planes stacked in the sky, and the score leans on synth-driven action cues over a bed of ambient hum. The vibe is tense, wisecracking and cold-weather restless, the kind of holiday-season pressure cooker that suits a long-haul flight, a loud Friday night, or a seasonal rewatch with friends. Pacing is relentless, and McClane's arc is a wry, weary man pushed past his limits while stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time, with bursts of dark humour undercutting the strain. Violence is frequent and stylised, with gunfights, explosions and fistfights that are bloody at points but more bombastic than grim; there is some profanity, peril to crowds, and a sustained sense of threat. This suits viewers who want big-scale action, practical stunts and a hard-edged sense of humour, not anything gentle.
