The story

Eight-year-old Jack and his younger sister Annie find a magic treehouse, which whisks them back to an ancient time zone where they see live dinosaurs.

What it’s like

Short, bright chapter-book energy: a sunny, uncomplicated read with the wonder of a treehouse that seems to belong to no one. The prose is brisk and plainly illustrated, with short chapters, simple sentences and frequent dialogue between two siblings who bicker and then rally together, so it reads quickly and easily aloud or alone. The sensory world is leafy and open: sunlit woods, a wooden treehouse rocking in the wind, then a sudden spin into a prehistoric valley of green ferns and lumbering, unhurried dinosaurs seen from a safe height. Its magic is gentle and curiosity-driven rather than menacing, with a sense of mild suspense that quickly settles into delight. Violence and gore are absent; the only danger is a brief, low-key tension around the creatures, never frightening for long. It suits a lazy afternoon, a child's bedtime reading, or a quick comfort read for anyone wanting something light, warm and wonder-filled. Ideal for young readers, especially early chapter-book readers, and for adults who want an easy, unfussy escape.
