The story

20 years since their first adventure, Lloyd and Harry go on a road trip to find Harry's newly discovered daughter, who was given up for adoption.

What it’s like

Bright, flat, overlit studio comedy: sunny suburban interiors, saturated primary colors, and wide road-trip vistas under hard daylight, shot in the no-nonsense coverage of a mainstream sequel rather than anything stylized. The sound is loud and bouncy, with slapstick sound effects, pop-rock needle drops, and bursts of physical gags that land on the beat. Its vibe is goofy, sunny and deliberately dumb, the kind of thing for a lazy afternoon, a long-haul flight, or background company while doing chores. Pacing is brisk and sketch-like, with one gag after another and little lingering on feeling; the emotional register stays broad and affectionate, and the two leads, a sweet, oblivious man and his bewildered, scheming partner, stay essentially the same people while they bicker, bumble and reconnect over the course of the trip. The intensity is low to moderate: frequent crude humor, sexual innuendo and bodily gags, a few scuffles and mishaps played for laughs, and no real gore or dread. It suits viewers who want gleefully silly, undemanding comedy with a warm buddy-movie core and a few jokes that will make them groan and grin at once.
