The story

El Capo, the most wanted drug dealer in Mexico, has been intercepted while hiding with his trusted men, his wife and his lover. During his escape, he declares war on the government and his own past.

What it’s like

Hard-edged telenovela styling: saturated colour, bright studio-lit interiors, close-ups held a beat too long on faces mid-confession, and a steady string of dusty roads, night drives and sun-bleached compounds that give the chase its restless feel. The score leans on swelling melodic strings and percussive stings that punctuate every reversal, so the mood swings between operatic romance and tense menace. The vibe is melodramatic and feverish, with a noir undertow: a crime boss's pride, loyalty and jealousy unravelling in rooms full of guns and whispered deals. It suits a long evening binge when you want episodes that land hard and keep pulling you to the next cliffhanger. Expect frequent shootings and killings, some brutal moments, betrayal, and sexual content and intimacy. It is not gentle. It is for viewers who enjoy dramatic, emotionally loud crime stories and the soap-opera conventions that come with them.
