The story

Jon and Garfield visit the United Kingdom, where a case of mistaken cat identity finds Garfield ruling over a castle. His reign is soon jeopardized by the nefarious Lord Dargis, who has designs on the estate.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated studio comedy in the way mid-2000s family films were: flat daylight over a sunny English countryside, a bustling London street, and a stately castle lit with warm interior lamps and chandeliers. The camera stays fairly conventional and busy, with quick cuts, cartoon-style slapstick timing, and CGI Garfield moving through real sets with a slightly glossy, digital finish. The score is brisk and orchestral, leaning on playful whimsy and pastoral swells, with plenty of pratfall sound effects. Its vibe is cheerful, goofy and lightly regal, the kind of easy watch for a sleepy weekend afternoon, a kids' movie with a grown-up in the room, or background company while folding laundry. Pacing is brisk and episodic, the emotional register sunny and undemanding, and the arc is simple: a lazy, self-centred cat discovers he can enjoy a little responsibility. Intensity is low: some slapstick tumbles and mild peril from a scheming villain, but no real violence, gore, or frightening content. It suits families with young children, fans of the comic strip, and anyone wanting something gentle, silly and warm.
