The story

This film, adapted from a work of fiction by author Tracy Chevalier, tells a story about the events surrounding the creation of the painting "Girl With A Pearl Earring" by 17th century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer. A young peasant maid working in the house of painter Johannes Vermeer becomes his talented assistant and the model for one of his most famous works.

What it’s like

Soft window light falls across ochre walls and pale linen in this 2003 film, its palette drawn straight from Vermeer's own Delft interiors: muted blues, warm browns, and sudden flashes of yellow and cream. Camera work is measured and still, with long frames that hold a room as if it were a painting, and the compositions often sit a figure against a window or a table of crockery and let the light do the talking. Sound is sparse, mostly domestic hush, the scrape of a chair, a distant bell, with Alexandre Desplat's quiet strings arriving only now and then. The mood is restrained and quietly sensual, a slow-burning hush rather than a rush, and the pacing unfolds at the speed of daily chores and careful looking. Its emotional register is tender and muted, following a young servant and her reserved employer as a fragile trust and a charged, unspoken attraction grow through close attention rather than declarations. Intensity is low: there is no violence or gore, some sexual tension and a restrained sensual scene, and a few harsh domestic moments. It suits a rainy afternoon, a slow evening with a glass of wine, or anyone who loves period dramas that prize atmosphere over action, for people who want something hushed, beautiful and lingering.
