The story

This standalone retail title spans three distinct stories, interwoven to create one of the most unique and engaging single-player experiences of this generation. This definitive Grand Theft Auto bundle boasts hundreds of hours of single-player gameplay; a full suite of open-world multiplayer game types limited only by players’ creativity; dozens of eclectic radio stations with hours of music and original dialogue.

What it’s like

Rain-slicked neon and grey, smog-hazed Liberty City at night, rendered with a gritty, lived-in realism: sodium-orange streetlight pooling on wet asphalt, washed-out daylight over concrete towers, and a crowd of unremarkable faces that makes the city feel crowded and tired. Dialogue, traffic chatter and the constant hum of the car radio do most of the atmospheric work, with a dozen-plus stations spanning hip-hop, classic rock, dance and talk radio, all cutting through a restless, sardonic mood. Its vibe is cynical, dark-comic and restless, best suited to long late-night sessions, a commute-length detour, or wandering a city with no particular destination. The pacing is loose and sandbox-driven, shifting between slow drives and sudden bursts of chaotic action, and the three interwoven stories follow immigrants and small-time criminals chasing a better life and getting ground down by it, with a melancholy undertow beneath the satire. Intensity is high: frequent, often brutal shootings, bloody gore, explicit crude language, drug use and sexual references, and cruelty played for both shock and humour. This suits adults who want a sharp, cynical crime satire with a weighty story and a huge playground, and it will not suit anyone seeking something gentle.
