The story

To defeat Thor, the Norse god of thunder who has killed scores of innocents, Viking vampire Leif Helgarson teams up with Atticus O'Sullivan, the last of the Druids, a werewolf, a sorcerer, and an army of frost giants.

What it’s like

Brisk, wisecracking urban fantasy in a first-person voice that reads like a hard-boiled sidekick with a sense of humour, full of quick dialogue, running jokes and snappy chapter-ending hooks. The sensory world is Tempe and the Arizona desert: sun-bleached streets, heat shimmer, dusty bars, and a bookshop full of worn spines and tea. Violence is frequent and bloody but mostly played for banter and action beats rather than lingering gore, with sexual content light and not central. The mood is fast, funny and a little rowdy, the sort of book that suits a long-haul flight, a lazy weekend afternoon, or a stretch of late-night reading where you want momentum and laughs. Its people are a mismatched crew of outsiders forming loyalties under pressure, a wry, self-deprecating hero learning to trust his allies. It is for readers who enjoy mythology mashed up with pop-culture irreverence, sarcastic protagonists, and a steady pace of quips and fights.
