The story

Harry Potter's life is in danger once more as dangerous wizard Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban Prison and is heading to Hogwarts.

What it’s like

Warm amber lamplight in the castle corridors, then a sudden drop into grey, rain-soaked moors and the cold blue of dementors drifting over a lake. Director Alfonso Cuarón moves the camera with a restless, roving energy: sweeping crane shots over the grounds, swooping tracking moves through the Forbidden Forest, and a Quidditch match filmed in dizzying, handheld-feeling motion. Palettes shift from golden autumn tones to bleached winter greys, and the grain is soft and filmic. John Williams's score sounds bright and mischievous in the classroom and goes low and uneasy around Azkaban's shadows. The vibe is autumnal and wistful with a shiver of dread, the kind of film that suits a chilly weekend afternoon or a comfort rewatch with someone younger. Pacing is brisk but unhurried in its quieter stretches, letting the young trio's friendship breathe between set-pieces. The emotional register is bittersweet: a lonely boy finding a surrogate family, and a wounded man trying to be trusted again. Intensity is moderate: frightening creatures and a few sharp, brief scuffles, with no gore and little real cruelty, though the dementor scenes can unsettle younger viewers. For families and fans who want fantasy with heart and atmosphere.
