The story

It's a new school year for the Truham-Higgs gang. As Nick and Charlie's relationship deepens, their thoughts turn to life after the last bell rings.

What it’s like

Warm, sunlit school corridors and soft pastel colour give this film a gentle, cheerful glow, with the bright, open feel of a Sunday afternoon spent in a friend's bedroom. Scenes are mostly unhurried two-shots and group conversations in ordinary rooms, lit by natural daylight and framed with an easy closeness that lets faces and small gestures carry the story. The score is light and melodic, and the quiet moments between characters are given room to breathe. The mood is tender and hopeful, with a current of anxiety running underneath as the group faces the approaching end of school. Its emotional register is sweet and earnest, following young people learning to trust each other and grow up together. Themes of coming out, friendship, mental health and an eating disorder are handled with care rather than shock. There is no graphic violence, and the most intense moments are emotional rather than frightening. It suits a comfort rewatch, a slow weekend afternoon, or anyone who wants a warm, affirming queer romance that treats its teenagers with kindness and respect.
