The story

Little Red Riding Hood: A classic story, but there's more to every tale than meets the eye. Before you judge a book by its cover, you've got to flip through the pages. In the re-telling of this classic fable, the story begins at the end of the tale and winds its way back. Chief Grizzly and Detective Bill Stork investigate a domestic disturbance at Granny's cottage, involving a karate-kicking Red Riding Hood, a sarcastic wolf and an oafish Woodsman.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated CGI with a storybook sheen: sunlit forest clearings in lurid greens, cluttered cottage interiors crammed with props, and a deliberately crude, cartoonish camera that whips around, zooms into faces and cuts on exaggerated reaction shots. The sound is a brisk orchestral-pop score punctuated by slapstick sound effects, and the whole thing moves at a quick, mock-noir clip as detectives interview suspects and rewind the fairy tale. The vibe is goofy, self-aware and cheerfully scrappy, a parody that plays like a fast-talking kids' comedy with adult wordplay underneath. Its violence is cartoonish and mostly slapstick: karate kicks, pratfalls, a bit of mild peril and a wolf who is more sarcastic than menacing, with no gore and no sexual content. It suits a silly Saturday afternoon, a family movie night, or a light comfort watch when you want something quick and funny. Fans of spoofs, fractured fairy tales and wisecracking voice cast will find it easy company.
