The story

The gang that created Airplane! and The Naked Gun sets its sights on Top Gun in this spoof. Topper Harley is a talented but unstable fighter pilot with an axe to grind: clearing the family name. His mission is to avenge his father and save a mission sabotaged by greedy weapons manufacturers. He also gets involved in a relationship with Ramada Thompson, a woman with an unusually talented stomach. Hot Shots! makes fun of a variety of other films, from Dances with Wolves to The Fabulous Baker Boys.

What it’s like

Bright, flat daylight over sun-baked aircraft carriers and sleek jets, with a glossy early-nineties sheen that makes every movie-star pose look a little too polished. The camera mimics the earnest framing of a Hollywood action picture, so the jokes land in the gaps between heroic close-ups and swelling, self-serious music. Pacing is relentless and sketch-like: gags arrive every few seconds, many of them visual, and a single scene often stacks three or four spoofs of other films in a row. The register is goofy and deadpan, with plenty of slapstick, pratfalls, and cheerful sexual innuendo, though nothing graphic. Violence is cartoonish and constant: crashes, explosions, and mock-heroic destruction that never really hurts anyone. The emotional arc follows a reckless, damaged pilot slowly learning to be a little less of a mess. Good for a loud, silly night in or a lazy weekend when you want to laugh at movie clichés without any real stakes. Fits fans of Airplane! and gag-heavy parody who don't mind the jokes being hit-or-miss.
