The story

After an accident on a winding road, four teens make the fatal mistake of dumping their victim's body into the sea. Exactly one year later, the deadly secret resurfaces as they're stalked by a hook-handed figure.

What it’s like

Late-summer dusk on a North Carolina coast, sea-fog and sodium streetlamps, the palette leaning on teal water, sunset orange and the wet black of a slick road. Jim Gillespie shoots it in conventional, polished 90s widescreen: steady handheld moves through the high-school crowd, bright fluorescent gym and beach-party light, and then a turn toward dark, rain-soaked nights where the camera lingers on empty roads and the glint of a fishing hook. The score is a brisk orchestral-pop thriller pulse with sudden stings, and the quiet beach scenes carry the sound of waves and tinny radios. The vibe is glossy teen dread, a sunny-then-shadowed unease that suits a Friday night with friends, a sleepover double feature, or a Halloween watch. Pacing is quick, with a mystery that tightens through guilt-soaked friendships, a romance that sours into suspicion, and a group of teens who turn on each other. Violence is present and sharp: a few brief, startling murders and a stabbing or two, with bloody stills rather than sustained gore, and a steady jolt of jump-scare fear. Mild sexual content and teen drinking appear. It's for people who want a classic slasher-mystery with a bit of nostalgic gloss, not something gentle.
