The story

A prisoner on death row in the US, a vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar cross paths in the most unexpected way.

What it’s like

Cool English daylight over a sleepy market town, then the blunt fluorescence of a US death row and the close, sour dark of a cellar, so the picture keeps swapping between open air and enclosed rooms. Mysteries stay tightly controlled and talky, with a wry, deadpan edge rather than thriller bombast, and the score mostly stays out of the way. The rhythm is brisk and twisty, each episode tugging a loose thread, with the tone sliding between dry comedy and unease. Its people are oddly stranded: a clergyman drifting toward a crisis of faith, a condemned man whose composure hides something, a teacher holding on through sheer wit. Their arcs bend toward connection and surprising resolve. Violence is threatened more than shown, with menace, interrogation and confinement carrying the tension, and any brutality is brief and not gory. It suits a weekend binge with the lights on, or an evening when you want something clever and dark without graphic horror. It is for viewers who enjoy Moffat's puzzle-box plotting and a little gallows humour.
