The story
A century-old vampire from New Orleans reunites with an ailing journalist to recount his life of bloodlust and his tumultuous relationship with the rakish Frenchman who turned him.
What it’s like
Candlelit parlours and gaslit salons glow in deep amber and oxblood, set against humid, rain-dark New Orleans streets that feel close and sticky, with the air thick enough to taste. The camera moves with unhurried, sweeping grace through period rooms, lingering on silk, lace and hands, while the present-day interview unfolds in a dim, cluttered hotel room where a single lamp throws long shadows. The score swells with strings and low choral texture, then drops away to near silence during tense exchanges. The mood is lush, melancholy and sensual, with a languid pace that rewards patience. Feeding scenes are bloody and graphic, violence arrives suddenly and lands hard, and there is frank sexual content and a disturbing child-vampire storyline, so it is not gentle. Built around a long, fraught bond between two immortals, it suits viewers who want gothic romance, moral ambiguity and Southern atmosphere on a late, rain-soaked night alone.
