The story

In a newly independent India, a studio boss, his movie-star wife, a trusted aide, a nautch girl and a refugee will have their paths cross in their pursuit of stardom and riches.

What it’s like

Lush period glamour in the style of a 1940s Bombay studio: saturated jewel tones, gilded soundstages and dressing rooms lit warm and amber, cigarette haze drifting through spotlight beams, and sumptuous costume fabrics that catch the light. Camera moves easily through rehearsal floors and crowded sets, with long, sweeping tracking shots and elaborate musical numbers that break into colour and rhythm. Between those showpieces the mood turns hushed and bruised: late-night rooms lit by lamps, quiet corridors, and an undercurrent of unease as a newly independent nation shifts beneath everyone's feet. The score blends orchestral swells with classic film-song strains and jazz-inflected lounge. Pacing is languid and layered, with ambition, jealousy and loyalty tightening slowly across the episodes. The vibe is opulent and melancholic, a glittering surface over restless longing. Intensity runs moderate: some violence, sexual content and adult themes, with drinking and smoking throughout, and emotional darkness more than gore. Suited to a long evening with a drink, or a binge for people who love period drama, old studio-era cinema and the price of fame.
