The story

Set in a timeless mythical forest inhabited by fairies, goblins, unicorns and mortals, this fantastic story follows a mystical forest dweller, chosen by fate, to undertake a heroic quest. He must save the beautiful Princess Lili and defeat the demonic Lord of Darkness, or the world will be plunged into a never-ending ice age.

What it’s like

Long, lush compositions of fog-hung forest, shafts of silver moonlight and candle-warm interiors, all shot with a dreamlike, painterly glow that makes every frame feel like a storybook illustration brought to life. Snow drifts through blackened pines, ice crusts the ground in a pale, glittering hush, and the Lord of Darkness's gothic castle brims with smoke, horns and hellish red. The score rolls in on swelling orchestral waves and the chime of tinkling bells, while the forest itself breathes with birdsong and rustling leaves. The vibe is wistful enchantment tinged with dread, a fairy tale told at dusk, with a slow, ceremonial pace that lingers on wonder more than action. Its emotional register is earnest and romantic, following a young woodsman who is drawn out of his simple life into a bold quest and a tender bond with a luminous princess. Violence is brief and mostly cartoonish, with some menace and a few frightening creatures that may unsettle young children, and no real gore. It suits a snowy weekend, a comfort rewatch, or anyone craving old-fashioned fantasy atmosphere and mythic romance.
