The story

What it’s like

Dense, perfumed and nocturnal, with imagery that moves between gilded interiors, rain-soaked Paris streets, and rotting flesh. The sonnets are tightly metred and rhymed, so reading them aloud has a slow, incantatory pull, and the cadence sounds like a bell tolling in an empty room. The mood is sumptuous melancholy: boredom and spleen, longing for beauty that turns to ash, a restless ache rather than despair. It suits late nights alone, a cold grey afternoon in a café, or a slow reread with a glass of wine. Its intensity is literary and psychological. There is morbid imagery of corpses and decay, frank erotic longing, and a sense of sin and self-disgust, but no gore or onscreen violence, and the darkness comes through suggestion more than shock. Readers who want an atmospheric, emotionally bruised world of sensual language and moral unease, and who are comfortable with poems that dwell on death and desire, will find it rewarding.
