The story

Gary, who has just married Samantha, the woman of his dreams, discovers that her six-year-old son may be the Antichrist.

What it’s like

Bright suburban daylight and flat, sunny cul-de-sacs give this film a cheerfully ordinary look, with the horror staged in cozy interiors, family kitchens, and tidy front yards rather than in shadowy gothic sets. The camera stays fairly conventional and comedic, with clean two-shots, reaction close-ups, and a bright, buoyant palette that keeps the unease light. The score is breezy and playful, underlining the gags more than building dread. The rhythm is brisk and wry, moving through awkward dinners and domestic misunderstandings with a steady stream of jokes. Its emotional center is a nervous stepfather trying to earn the trust of a wary child and a new wife, a comedy of anxious adjustment. Violence exists but is cartoonish and sporadic, with some gore and horror-movie scares that land as broad rather than frightening. It suits a lazy weekend evening or a light date night, and it is for viewers who like horror-comedy that is more amused than scary.
