The story
The exceptionally gifted Ghost King, He Simu, unexpectedly encounters the young general, Duan Xu, while out on a break, searching for food. This young general, who carries an item belonging to someone from He Simu's past, seems not to be the real Duan Xu. As they test each other through subtle exchanges, He Simu gradually uncovers the dark past and aspirations hidden within Duan Xu’s heart. In turn, Duan Xu discovers the steadfastness and loneliness that He Simu has endured. Despite the fleeting lifespan of a mortal, no more than a hundred years, and the four-hundred-year-old ghost who still retains the appearance of a young girl, they resist the relentless passage of time through their love.
What it’s like
Costume-drama romance in a xianxia fantasy world, with the mood set by its premise: a ghost king who has lived for four centuries and a general who may not be who he claims. Expect the ornate, period-styled look and courtly, measured dialogue typical of the genre, with supernatural elements and martial-fantasy staging rather than a grounded realism. The register is wistful and slow-burning, a bittersweet vibe about loneliness, guarded testing, and time that refuses to stop. It suits a quiet evening, a series to follow across several nights, or a stretch when you want romantic fantasy with an undercurrent of melancholy. Its arcs trace two guarded people slowly revealing their pasts to each other, with the emotional pull coming from exchanges and restraint more than from action. Intensity is moderate: supernatural peril and combat appear, but the focus stays on romance and emotional weight. It is made for viewers who enjoy long-lived, mournful love stories, ghostly and historical settings, and the gradual intimacy of two people who have been alone for a very long time.
