The story

Set in the 1920s French Riviera, a master magician is commissioned to try and expose a psychic as a fraud.

What it’s like

Warm, sun-drenched Riviera light: golden hour over white villas, cypress and olive trees, pale linen suits and pastel dresses, and the glittering blue of the Mediterranean seen through wide, mostly still compositions that let the actors and their rooms breathe. Woody Allen's camera rarely hurries; scenes play out in measured two-shots and leisurely dinner-table conversations, with a jaunty 1920s jazz and classical score that slips in and out like a gramophone in another room. The vibe is elegant, bantering and faintly wistful, the kind of light-hearted comedy you can settle into on a slow afternoon or a lazy weekend evening with a glass of rosé. Its tone is breezy and witty, with a gentle undercurrent of romantic longing and a few moments of quiet, after-dark reflection on whether certainty is worth more than wonder. Its arcs follow a cynical, self-assured illusionist slowly softened by a sceptical yet hopeful young woman, both gradually loosening their defences. Intensity is very low: there is no violence, no gore, and nothing frightening; the only tension is verbal sparring and romantic uncertainty. Made for viewers who want a sunny, talky, gently romantic comedy with period charm and no real stakes.
