The story

"Dirty" Harry Callahan is a San Francisco Police Inspector on the trail of a group of rogue cops who have taken justice into their own hands. When shady characters are murdered one after another in grisly fashion, only Dirty Harry can stop them.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached San Francisco in flat daylight and drifting fog, with steep hills, brown sedans and gleaming police motorcycles moving through wide, sharply composed frames, the camera settling on streets and stairwells rather than chasing action. A brassy, percussive jazz score and the throb of engines give it a restless 1970s pulse, while dim offices and apartments hold a tight, watchful unease. The vibe is hard-edged and cynical, a cop thriller with a bitter moral chill, well suited to a late-night watch or a double bill of 70s crime cinema. The pacing is brisk, built on interrogations, stakeouts and sudden bursts of gunfire, and the emotional register is cold and combative, following a lone, unbending detective's contempt for bureaucracy and a colleague's slide into self-righteous killing. Violence is frequent and sharp: several shootings and staged murders with visible blood but no sustained gore. Expect coarse language, a few sexual scenes and steady menace. It is for viewers who want gritty, morally uneasy police drama with a strong period feel and no softening.
