The story
Two teenagers from very different backgrounds awaken to newly acquired superpowers which mysteriously link them to one another.
What it’s like
Cloak & Dagger leans into a glossy, saturated Marvel-Netflix look: night-city streets rendered in hard neon pinks, electric blues and sodium orange, with the shadowy interiors of New Orleans and the sun-bleached tones of daytime Louisiana cutting against them. Its camera favours handheld movement in the fight scenes and steadier, shallow-focus close-ups for the quieter talk, and the effects have a slightly comic-panel sheen, with light that flares and pulses when the powers flare. The score is synth-tinged and driving in action moments and softer, piano-led in the intimate ones. Its vibe is earnest, bright and a little melancholy, the kind of show suited to a weekend binge on the sofa or a comfort rewatch with the sound up. Pacing is episodic and warm, with a teenage romance and a found-family thread running alongside the superhero business. Its two central figures are working through grief, loneliness and class difference, and the arc is about slowly learning to trust each other. Intensity is moderate: there are regular street fights, some shootings and gunfire, drug-related danger and a few tense, dark sequences, but the gore is limited and the tone stays hopeful. It suits viewers who want youthful, character-driven superhero drama with romance and heart, rather than grim or violent spectacle.
